Our Story: From Arabic Virtual School to Manarat Al Hayat
Everything felt completely different—neither the culture nor the society resembled anything familiar to me from my homeland, Syria. This overwhelming feeling was the most significant impact I experienced when I first set foot in Japan in 2010. Coming from a deeply rooted Arab culture, the transition was challenging. As time passed, my young children began to grow, and with each year, my concerns about the influence of foreign cultures on them grew stronger. I often encountered Arab children in Japan who had lost part of their identity by losing their native Arabic language. Some couldn't express their thoughts in Arabic alone, mixing it with Japanese or other languages to form a sentence that conveyed their ideas. This heightened my fear of losing not only my children’s identity but also the identity of Arab children in general. I felt the immense responsibility, and deep reflection led to a protective revolution within me—to safeguard my family, my children, and the children of other Arab families from cultural loss. I decided to use my skills in computer science, education, psychology, and Islamic studies to create a solution. In 2014, I founded the Arabic Virtual School in Japan, building strong virtual classrooms that nurtured Arabic language and Islamic studies for Arab children living abroad. My goal was to provide a space where my children, and those of other concerned parents, could protect their identity from linguistic erosion and cultural assimilation—while still enjoying the richness of other cultures. We aimed to embrace what aligned with our values and reject what conflicted with our religion and ethics. From then on, the dream grew, and so did the school, paving the way for a generation that is proud of its identity and rooted in its community! As we continued this journey, we realized that the challenges faced by Muslim families in Japan went beyond just education. Our decade-long experience as a Muslim family in Japan presented various obstacles, especially in terms of social integration and mental well-being. It became clear that there was a gap in understanding the unique needs of Muslim families from Japanese professionals, particularly in the fields of psychology and social support. Driven by these challenges, we expanded our vision. In 2015, we established Manarat Al Hayat, extending our mission to offer not just educational services, but also family counseling and teacher training. Through Manarat, we began to focus on enriching the lives of Muslim families in Japan and beyond. Our team of specialists in education, family dynamics, and mental health is dedicated to offering comprehensive support. From customized educational programs to compassionate counseling, we strive to empower our clients to achieve their goals and maintain their Islamic identity. Today, Arabic Virtual School and Manarat Al Hayat stand together as pillars of support for Muslim families, offering a holistic approach to education, family well-being, and mental health. We invite you to join us on this inspiring journey toward a brighter, more fulfilling future for our children and our community.
